The City of Burnaby Citizen Support Services is comprised of approximately 380 volunteers who give their time and energy to the community on a regular basis, supporting the following programs.

Outings for the Elderly (Gadabouts)

Trips for housebound seniors and people with disabilities. Volunteer drivers escort clients to and from the bus to the event or the event itself, and assist on the outings. There is a small charge for this.

Lunch Program

Volunteer drivers bring clients from their home to a local Seniors’ Centre for lunch, then return them home. Volunteers greet and assist the clients. There is a small charge for the lunch.

Phone Buddy Program

Volunteers call clients to visit with them over the telephone. Volunteers can call every day or occasionally for a friendly conversation and to make sure everything is okay.

Shop by Phone Grocery Purchasing Program

Clients order groceries by telephone once a week. Volunteers take the phone orders and shop at a local supermarket. Groceries are then delivered by the store, and the clients pay for their order when it is delivered. There is a small charge for this program.

Shopping Buddies Program

Volunteers accompany seniors and people with disabilities to a local mall to help them with their personal shopping. Call for more information. There are HandyDart charges for this program.

Volunteer Visitor Program

Volunteers visit in the client’s home to provide companionship for isolated or lonely elderly people and people with disabilities.
